Testicular Cancer Treatment

Testicular cancer is a rare form of cancer that begins in the testicles (the male reproductive glands that produce sperm and hormones). Though it is less common, it typically affects younger men (ages 15 to 35). Early detection and treatment lead to excellent outcomes.

Signs & Symptoms of Testicular Cancer:

  • Painless lump or swelling in one or both testicles
  • Pain or discomfort in the scrotum or lower abdomen
  • A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum
  • Sudden fluid collection in the scrotum
  • Pain or aching in the lower abdomen or back
  • Breast tenderness or growth (in some cases, due to hormonal changes)

Diagnosis of Testicular Cancer:

  • Physical Examination: A thorough testicular exam to check for lumps or changes.
  • Ultrasound: A non-invasive imaging test to visualize the tumor in the testicle.
  • Blood Tests: To measure tumor markers like alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH).
  • CT Scan or MRI: To check for the spread of cancer to other parts of the body.
  • Biopsy: In rare cases, a biopsy may be performed to confirm the diagnosis, though surgery is typically preferred for treatment.

Nephrectomy, radical cystectomy, radical prostatectomy, Penectomy

Nephrectomy is the removal of all or part of a kidney. Radical Cystectomy involves removing the bladder, often due to cancer. Radical Prostatectomy is the removal of the prostate gland, usually to treat prostate cancer. Penectomy is the removal of all or part of the penis, often for cancer treatment. These are major surgical procedures commonly performed to treat cancers affecting the kidneys, bladder, prostate, and penis.

Radical Cystectomy

  • Removal of the bladder and sometimes surrounding organs or tissues.
  • Reconstruction of the urinary system to allow urine to pass from the body.
  • Often used in advanced or aggressive bladder cancers.
  • Can be performed using open or robotic-assisted techniques.

Radical Prostatectomy

  • Used for localized prostate cancer.
  • Can be done through open surgery, laparoscopic, or robotic-assisted methods.
  • Remove the cancerous tissue to maintain urinary control and erectile function.
  • May require additional therapies like radiation or hormone therapy after surgery.

Nephrectomy

Nephrectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of a kidney, often done to treat kidney cancer or damage.

Penectomy

Penectomy is the surgical removal of all or part of the penis, usually performed to treat penile cancer or severe trauma.

These procedures are crucial in treating genitourinary cancers:

  • Nephrectomy for kidney cancer.
  • Radical Cystectomy for bladder cancer.
  • Radical Prostatectomy for prostate cancer.
  • Penectomy for penile cancer.

Pre-Treatment Care for Testicular Cancer:

  • Health Evaluation: Thorough medical evaluation to assess overall health and suitability for surgery.
  • Sperm Banking: If chemotherapy or surgery may affect fertility, sperm banking is recommended before treatment.
  • Psychological Counseling: Support for emotional well-being, as testicular cancer can impact self-esteem and body image.

Post-Treatment Care for Testicular Cancer:

  • Recovery & Monitoring: Post-surgical recovery typically includes hospital observation and follow-up visits to monitor recovery.
  • Fertility Support: Options for fertility preservation, such as sperm banking, may be discussed.
  • Chemotherapy Side Effect Management: Post-treatment care to manage fatigue, nausea, and other side effects of chemotherapy.

Follow-Up Care: Regular imaging tests and blood work to check for signs of recurrence.
